The internationally renowned artist was born in Mazatlan in 1936. His local roots are discerned in his amiable voice, in the touches of nostalgia obvious in his works, and also in the sensations of discomfort in cold weather felt by those born in the warmth of the tropics.
He graduated in 1958 from the prestigious San Carlos Academy in Mexico City. During the following decade he concentrated on the creation of ceramic pieces, artistic objects such as jewels and articles made from various materials and with diverse motifs.
“I come from abstractionism,” says Lopez Saenz, “and I have traveled many roads, some even in the vanguard.” These experiences are seen in his works, where the brushstrokes reveal a unique style. His human figures inhabit scenes which have little relation with reality, but his paintings reach a harmony of tonalities and lines as clean and wonderful as they are extravagant.
Despite his natural humility, Lopez Saenz takes pride in having witnessed the expansion of the plastic arts in Sinaloa. He says he feels honored, satisfied and happy with the prize that bears his name, and he remarks upon the high quality that youthful artists of Sinaloa are reaching. An idea that he frequently talks about is the gradual development of a style of art called the Sinaloa School of Painting. And he reconfirms his posture as a constant spectator, one who observes and brings forth a new way of looking at the world.
