Mazatlan has a long tradition of combining art in its various forms with the revelry of the carnaval celebrations. For many years a succession of outstanding writers have won the Mazatlan Prize for Literature and the Clemencia Isaura Prize for Poetry. More recently the city has incorporated the plastic arts into this mix with the creation of a contast called the Antonio Lopez Saenz Prize in honor of the internationally renowned Mazatlan artist.
