The Mazatlan Prize is one of the most prestigious literary awards in Mexico. It is given every year during an Evening of the Arts as part of Carnaval, in recognition of the best work of fiction published during the preceding year.
Such notable authors as Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes and Elena Poniatowska have received this honor over the years.
The prize was instituted in 1964 when proposed by three prominent Mazatlecans, Francisco Alvarez Farber, Raul Rico Mendiola and the Sinaloa writer and journalist Antonio Haas as a means of highlighting the best literary works produced in Mexico. Since the Carnaval of the following year, when Jose Gorostiza won the prize for “Muerte Sin Fin” (Endless Death), the city has paid tribute to the pens of the most renowned writers in the country.
